As Christians of many stripes we all pause to remember the radical humility of God first manifested through the Incarnation and birth of Christ. In Martin Luther’s theology of the cross he saw that the love of God is oriented downwards (towards us), meaning that we do not need to climb the ladder up to God: he has climbed down to us.
“…though having the very likeness of God [he] did not regard equality with God as something to be eagerly seized, but rather emptied himself by taking the likeness of a slave while being born in human likeness…” Philippians 2:6-7
“And the Word became flesh/fragile/finite and tabernacled among us…” John 1:14a
May we replicate the radical lowliness of our God in all we say and do this season.
